Tradition: The transmission of customs or beliefs from generation to generation, or the fact of being passed on in this way.

Some wedding traditions as old as time and some as new as you! Whether you’re making a new tradition or continuing an older one, lets go through some of the most popular, and some new ideas that you may want to give a try!

SOMETHING OLD SOMETHING NEW SOMETHING BORROWED SOMETHING BLUE

This popular saying is exactly what it reads. Perhaps one of the most popular sayings doing this is supposed bring good luck to the bride! Each item represents its own meaning; something old is said to represent the couples past lives. Something new represents the future ahead of the couple, something borrowed is typically from a happily married couple and should bring the new couple good luck, something blue is said to represent fidelity and love!

WEARRING A VEIL

This tradition goes back to ancient Rome! Although the meaning of this tradition has changed a little its original purpose was to disguise the bride from evil spirits looking to ruin her wedding day. You also may have heard the purpose of the veil is for the father to reveal the “gift” he is giving the groom. There are many types of meanings to this tradition making it so popular through many cultures.

“TYING THE KNOT”

This popular traditional saying dates wayyy back to Celtic and Hindu weddings! The bride and groom’s hands would be joined and tied together symbolizing the commitment to each other and the knot symbolized the eternal time they will spend together. This saying is widely recognized to mean wedding and now you know why!

TOSSING THE BOUQUET

Another popular tradition (and quite fun one too) is to toss the brides bouquet. This has been done since the 14th century and wasn’t exactly the bouquet but instead the garter! The bride would toss the garter to a crowd of men at the wedding and then the groom would have to save his bride from the mob of men! This clearly changed to tossing the bouquet to the women and is now a symbol for who will find love! A much better idea in my opinion!

NEW TRADITIONS AND IDEAS

BRIDES SIDE AND GROOMS SIDE

This older tradition is great however soo many weddings have opted for a more integrated seating of their guests. They encourage their guests to meet the family members of each other’s family. A popular seating sign at the ceremony is “pick a seat not a side”. The wedding is supposed to join people together not separate and I love the new tradition!

ALTARS

For so many years the wedding wasn’t complete without an altar however so many weddings have traded in their altar for an amazing background from mother earth herself! However, some couples have not totally took out the altar they have just modernized the idea and mixed things up. Additionally, a really popular altar has been a circular altar. Circular altars give a grand luxury design to weddings especially when decorated with florals!

And Lastly,

BRIDESMAIDS DRESSES

For ages the bridesmaids would be in matching dresses. Slowly this has faded as people let their bridesmaids choose their own or a different variation of the same color or style of dress. Switching up the dresses is a great idea as you want your brides maids to feel comfortable and confident in what they’re in!

Wedding traditions old or young are a fun way to make meaning and significance to the slightest of things! What are some of your traditions that you love or some you created yourself?
